I have wrote an analysis on the first 2 minutes the horror film 1408. I have spoke about the camera angles, connotations, music and mise-en-scene. I started at the 14th second and carried on at the main section of the title sequence.
14 seconds - Plain black screen which connotes evil and something dark and bad that could happen with white writing for the credits which they contrast each other. this as well as the non diagetic sound which is creepy and wary shows straight away that it could be a horror film.
28 seconds - See the first glimpse of the movie from when it fades out from the credits in to a dark scene of a road with lowkey lighting. the shot is an extreme long shot looking at a long deserted road with a building on the left which could be argued as an establishing shot. The place is surrounded by trees and looks like it is in the middle of no where. This could show that it is in a Forrest which is stereotypical for some horror films. Also it is chucking it down with rain with thunder this is using the affect of pathetic fallace. This is when the weather represents the tone and mood of the scene. This shows then that something bad is going to happen and again shows a mysterious and dangerous path the the character is taking.
30 seconds - We are shown the name of the first character. This is important as the audience must be introduced to the characters by the credits at the start of the film. the writing is plain white and bold which makes it clear an visible for the audience.
31 seconds - Camera pans from the position of looking down the road toward the house. This is also an establishing shot to dhow the audience that he is in the middle of no where but there is a creepy old house and that's its.
33 seconds - We are now shown the name of the second character in the credits. This is again bold and white to grab attention of the audience.
40 seconds - Car comes right up close to the camera and stops. The lights of the camera are bright and grabs the audiences attention, then the title looks as if i has come out of the of car lights. The title is whit and bold, the same as the credits but is bigger than anything else to make it stand out, but also has a ghostly effect to show to the audience the film is mysterious and a ghostly horror.
45 seconds - Camera shot changes to a high angled shot looking down onto the car that has reverses back to have a look at the sign on the side of the road. this shows venerability of the car drive as hes being looked down on and connotes confusion of the driver as it seems that he is lost.
50 seconds - Camera shot turns to a close up on to the character inside the car looking through the front window of the car. As soon as this shot comes up the audience can hear the radio from inside the car that say "Open the gates of hell!" which makes the audience hear what the the character can he which connotes death and danger to show that is again a horror film.
56 seconds - The camera angle changes to a point of view shot on the sign. this shows that the character is lost as he is looking to see where he is. on the sign it says "please come back" which couold conote that not many people to come back as some bad things happen there which shows againh that it is a horror film.
1.02 seconds - The camera then moves back to the close up shot on his face to show the facial expression of confussion. this is backed when he gets a map out to see where he is or can go.
1.09 seconds - It has moved to an extrem close up shot on the back tire of the car. This could be to show that somthing bad could happen to it such as get suck/ breakdown in the middle of nowhere. This is stereotypical as in horror films bad things happen all the time and nothing goes right.
1.15 seconds - Still credits coming up, low key lighting with the added bit of the location being scary as it is surrounded by trees. this makes the characters look isolated which connotes a stereotypical horror.
1.25 seconds - Still raining and thundering, going over a old wooden bridge which shows the views that that is the only way in or out of the place that is in the middle of no where. a long and high angled shot to make him look small and vulnerable.
1.30 seconds - Looks like a Point Of View shot but not by the character. by someone looking at the character through the bushes. This adds to the vulnerability of the character. the place also looks old a creepy. the type of place you wouldnt want to go at that time of night.
1.38 seconds - Suddenly changes to a high key lighting, the walls inside the house are green which is a calming colour. it changes the feeling of the film but it still is a bit dark. the hotel looks very old fashioned.
1.52 seconds - The people working in the hotel look happy and excited as they have got a customer. the place is still dark and the house is decorated in old décor.
2.00 seconds - Changes shot in to a shot reverse shot from he main character to the hotel workers when they are speaking. the workers start to talk about the hotels history and deaths, this add intensity and tension to the film which is stereotypical for a horror film.
